Tommy Ryan retired in December 1906. Ryan “gave” the title to Hugo Kelly, who had claimed the title after defeating Philadelphia Jack O’Brien in April 1905. Kelly, however, was not accepted by the public as the new champion, and Kelly lost his claim to Billy Papke. The title was also claimed by Stanley Ketchel, who defeated Joe Thomas, Jack Sullivan and Billy Papke to re-establish lineage.

Ketchel was murdered in October 1910. Papke had claimed the title in March 1910, thinking Ketchel had vacated, and he continued his claim after Ketchel’s death before losing to Cyclone Johnny Thompson, who lost to Frank Klaus. Georges Carpentier also claimed the title, before losing to Klaus. Papke re-claimed the title, after being recognised in Britain as world champion. Klaus defeated Papke in 1913 and is generally regarded as lineal champion from this win. Australia, however, recognised Eddie McGoorty after his win over Dave Smith. The lineage of McGoorty’s claim ended with Les Darcy’s death in 1917.
