Super Middleweight

The super middleweight division was established by the IBF in 1984, then by the WBA in 1987 with the WBC recognising the division in 1988. Murray Sutherland won the first-ever IBF super middleweight title fight. Chong Pal Park won the IBF title from Sutherland, then the newly created WBA title in 1987.

Girard was stripped of the WBA title for refusing a rematch with Siaca, and he never fought at super middleweight again. Mitchell reclaimed the WBA title with a win over Manny Siaca, eventually losing to long-time IBF titlist Sven Ottke. Ottke retired in 2004 and Joe Calzaghe, the long-time WBO titlist, unified with the new titlist Jeff Lacy in 2006. Mikkel Kessler took the WBA regular title from Manny Siaca, before unifying with WBC titleholder Markus Beyer. Calzaghe beat Kessler for the lineal championship.

Calzaghe vacated in 2008 after a pair of wins at light heavyweight over Bernard Hopkins and Roy Jones Jnr, before retiring. Andre Ward and Carl Froch established themselves as the top two contenders in the division between 2009-2011. Ward re-establishes lineage with his win over Froch.
