Foster announced his retirement in September 1974. The WBC recognised John Conteh after he defeated Ahumada in 1974. Conteh was stripped in 1977, and subsequently lost a challenge to new champion Mate Parlov, who lost to Matthew Saad Muhammad, who lost to Dwight Muhammad Qawi. The WBA recognised Victor Gallindez as their new champion. Gallindez lost to Mike Rossman, who lost to Marvin Johnson, who losty to Eddie Mustafa Muhammad. Michael Spinks defeated Eddie Mustafa Muhammad in 1981, then Dwight Muhammad Qawi in 1983 to re-establish lineage.

Michael Spinks vacated the light heavyweight championship after winning the heavyweight championship in September 1985.

Dennis Andries won the WBC title from JB Williamson, before losing to Hearns (in 1987), who subsequently vacated. Donny Lalonde won the vacant title, losing to Ray Leonard, who also vacated. Andries regained the title, losing, regaining, then losing again to Jeff Harding. Harding lost to Mike McCallum, who lost to Fabrice Tiozzo, who vacated in March 1997 after not defending the title for 12 months.

Marvin Johnson regained the WBA title, losing to Leslie Stewart, who lost to Virgil Hill, who lost to Thomas Hearns (in 1991), who lost to Iran Barkley. Barkley vacated, with Virgil Hill winning the vacant title.

The IBF title was won by Slobodan Kacar, who lost to Bobby Czyz, who lost to Charles Williams, who lost to Henry Maske. Maske and Hill had established themselves as the top two light heavyweights in the world before their November 1996 meeting, and Hill re-established lineage by defeating Maske.
